You know how I’m always yammering about poetry and memoir? Well, darned if I didn’t get a short story (fiction!) published today in Crack the Spine. Called “Small Solace,” it’s a little bit weird. I hope you enjoy it. If you do, please go to one of the magazine’s sites and post a comment of some sort about it. That’s because they use feedback to determine what pieces go into a print issue and which writers they do a Wordsmith interview on (they only choose one author each issue).
Here is the issue–look for page 27: Crack the Spine Issue 163
I did warn you that it’s a little weird. Yes, the wallet image here is a clue as to the subject.

Thanks so much, peeps!
Bravo, Luanne! That’s a good story and little Dab is an intriguing character. (He’s a dab hand, isn’t he?)
Sue, thanks! Hahaha, yes, he’s quite the dab hand ;)! If you have time, please let Crack the Spine know you liked it!
Done on Facebook!
Luann, Great read! I just responded on the site. (I’m reading the new collection of Shirley Jackson’s work, and there’s a story in there that has the same sort of theme…a college girl, bereaved and ignored, who controls the grief and neglect by [removed for spoiler alert.] I’ll get the title for you!) Dab was completely real!
Pam
Pam, thank you SO much for commenting over there on the site. And Shirley Jackson!! You have no idea how she is one of my first and still idols of the page! We Have Always Lived in the Castle is one of my favorite novels. And her story “One Ordinary Day, With Peanuts” I think of all the time, decades after I first read it. Sorry for taking out a couple of your words above for the spoiler alert ;). Yes, please get me the Jackson title!!!
Oh, gosh…I never thought about the spoiler issue! Glad you took care of it. Blogs feel so much like a conversation I often forget they are open to thousands of people. Will send the SJ title this weekend( and check out the ordinary day, too!)
LOL. I know what you mean. I feel the same way. I’m always surprised when somebody says “I read your blog posts,” and I had no idea they were readers ;). Thank you!!!
Great story, Luanne! Congratulations!
Jill, thank you so very much! And thank you for commenting on their FB wall!!! I soooo appreciate !
Congrats 🙂
Thank you!!! Joey, it’s pretty exciting to me because it’s such a different type of story than I usually write (real life, my own voice, etc.).
Congrats, Luanne! I can’t wait to read it. xo
Thanks, Rudri. I hope you enjoy it. It’s a different kind of writing from me than you are used to!
Poor Dab!
Hah, I know!! Thank you for your wonderful comment over there! I appreciate it so much!
You make my head spin with your versatility. Congrats on your latest publication!
Hah, I am envisioning a true head spin, like on the Exorcist. I hope nothing like that ;)! Thank you!!!
Congrats Luanne!
Thanks, CC!!
Well done
Derrick, thank you SO much for your support! It keeps me writing to hear comments like yours!
Congratulations Luanne, I left a comment on the site.
Andrea, that means a lot to me. Thank you very very very much! xo
Interesting story. Sad though and I liked the surprise ending. Your way with words shows wonderfully! 🙂 Will comment on the site.
Congratulations, Luanne! I’ll read your story as soon as I can (@#% firewall at work) 😉
