This is the 1st week of the Light Snow (November 22 – December 6) Shosetsu 小雪 Northern Hemisphere & Fine Weather: Shoman 小満 Southern Hemisphere season for Colleen Chesebro’s #TankaTuesday challenge based on the 24 Japanese seasons.
For a kigo word I chose turkey because even though we have spectacular summery weather right now, it is Thanksgiving week–even in Arizona! I decided to try a new to me form, tanka prose. I hope I did it right.

Grateful for Our Blessings
Once again our family will meet for Thanksgiving amidst the beautiful Phoenix weather. How grateful I am that we can be together. There will be ten plus one this time. The “plus one” will be brought by DIL and son . . . and is due in two months (or so).
under bluest skies
with bare arms and cheeks sunkissed
we come together
kids bring turkey and gravy
we offer fixins with love

I don’t know if you did the form right, but I love what you did with it. Wonderful juxtaposition of the “beautiful Phoenix weather” with Thanksgiving, a holiday usually associated with much cooler weather. Congratulations on the “plus one.” xo
Thanks, Marie! I will see if Colleen thinks it’s right or not, but I appreciate your appreciation!!! And thanks on the plus one haha. It didn’t get real until we started looking at a friend’s slightly “used” bassinette for us to have one for babysitting :).
Oh, babysitting! I hope you’re ready for it 😉
Congratulations on the “plus one”.
We’ve started a writing group and one of the members is giving vignettes of living in Japan in tanka prose. In her case she starts with a tanka, gives the background in prose, and then another tanka. I’m enjoying them!
Oh, I’ll have to remember to try that. Kind of a tanka sandwich hahaha. A writing group sounds fun. How did you all get together, if you don’t mind me asking?
And thanks on the plus one. It’s getting close, suddenly.
Congratulations on your plus one, very exciting!
Thanks, Liz!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!
You’re welcome, Luanne! Happy Thanksgiving!!
Thank you 🙂 xo
You’re welcome. 🙂
Sounds like a lovely holiday. Your kids bring the Turkey? Mine just bring appetites. Happy Thanksgiving, Luanne.
Hah! My SIL is a great cook (and bartender). He makes a fabulous turkey and even more fabulous gravy (that he works hard at). Daughter makes special mashed potatoes and gluten free desserts for her dad. My son is also a good cook and making all the appetizers. And my SIL’s mother is a good cook, too, and we celebrate with them. Between all of us we have it covered! Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, John!
Thank you, Luanne
You are welcome!
😁
Enjoy the holiday, Luanne
Thanks, Derrick. Although you won’t be celebrating Thanksgiving, I know you’re in good hands where dinner is concerned ;).
🙂
Happy Thanksgiving, Luanne.
Thank you, Anneli. I hope you have a wonderful week!
Aww…congratulations, Luanne! I’m so happy for you and your family!❤️❤️❤️

I don’t know if it was “right,” but it was great! Congratulations on the plus one! Sounds like the perfect family holiday with everyone pitching in. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Luanne!
Thank you, Eilene! Yes, everyone makes something, although DIL’s contribution is longer in the oven than the rest hahaha. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Your poem is so full of life and love, hope and blue skies. There’s nothing like an AZ winter. 🙂 Have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Luanne! 🙂
Marsha, thank you so much! I hope you have a great Thanksgiving, too, and hope to see you soon!
🙂 I’ll let you know when the next meetup is scheduled.
That would be great–looking forward! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Thank you, Polly, and thank you haha :). Happy Thanksgiving.
Happy Thanksgiving, Luanne–and oh, what joyous news about your plus one! So exciting! 💙
Happy Thanksgiving, Merril! Have fun with the jello mold hahaha. Wasn’t it a jello mold? Thank you so much! We are very excited.
Thank you, Luanne.
No, not Jello (gag). It’s cranberry sauce.
We had a wonderful Thanksgiving!
(Older child and their wife are here, so I’m catching up now.)
I hope you did, too.
I love this, Luanne. She’s bringing something in the over. That’s wonderful I enjoyed this tremendously. I cannot wait for the day when I have something like that to say… until then I wait. Happy Thanksgiving. Grateful for you. xoxo
Something in the oven! hahaha Thank you, Selma. We are excited! Happy Thanksgiving to you!! xo
Luanne, what beautiful tanka prose. Your tanka sounds like the best of summer and fall blended, and how wonderful to expect a grandchild! Everything in this tanka inspires gratitude.
Thank you, Wj! Hope you have a fabulous Thanksgiving! xo
Happy news about the baby! Is this your first grandchild? Enjoy your last Thanksgiving without small kids! 🙂
Yup, the first, and getting kind of nervous! Haha, that’s true. The last of a lot of things without a little one around. Happy Thanksgiving, Kate!
Two months will fly by!!! You and the gardener are about to have a blessed 2024!!
I am thankful for you, your voice, your words, your poetry.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Aw, that is so kind of you! Happy Thanksgiving to you and T and the little ones and the in between ones (haha). Can’t wait to have fun as you two do with the grandbabies.
Congratulations, Luanne! You’re going to be a grandma soon! Your tanka prose is lovely. How fun to have everyone home for Thanksgiving. Much love to you! 🥰
Thank you, Colleen!! Happy Thanksgiving to you! XO
I think it ‘s a wonderful tanka prose! I love your “plus one.”
Thank you, Lisa, on both counts!!!
How wonderful! Congratulations on a new grandbaby (soon.)
Well, it hasn’t happened yet, but things are moving along ;). Thank you, Jennie.
😍
I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with the whole family plus one. 🙂
It was very nice. How was yours?!
A lot of fun and exhausting even though I didn’t host it this year!
Isn’t that something though? I didn’t host either, and I completely wiped out today.
Too much chitchat, too many people. For an introvert, even being with the people you adore can be exhausting!
Yes!!! You get it!!!
Congratulations to the +1 🤗.
Thank you, Bee!!!!!
Love the fixins! Sounds like a great Thanksgiving.
Wonderful poem! Congratulations on your grandbaby soon to be!
Linda, thank you so much! I’m starting to get excited and working on my grandma name. Hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!
What Thanksgiving is all about!
Thank you, Kerfe!!!!!!!
That’s what it’s all about, Luanne! <3
I'm excited for your growing family!
Much love,
David
‘Fixins with love’ – how perfect. We’re north of you, Luanne, so our world is colder. This is the best time of the year to live in Phoenix. 😊
Congratulations to the plus one in your family. ☺️
Thank you so much!!!
It sounds like you had a wonderful Thanksgiving, Luanne. A beautiful poem about the holiday’s true meaning.
Thank you so much, Diana! xo
