Liz Gauffreau has made a video of the March 23 poetry reading for those who wanted to attend, but were unable to. Here ’tis.
Now, how do I stop saying um before every sentence? Are there online lessons available in that? Do I use a shock collar?

That’s an actual linguistic term for those Ums, but darned if I can remember what it is!
I just looked it up. Vocal disfluencies. The problem with my use in the video is that I use them for almost every sentence. And I had no idea. Since I had no idea I can’t stop myself, if that makes sense. I do NOT like public speaking. I like to READ (anything), but not speak.
Thanks for looking it up. Of course, if we are aware of a tendency to vocal disfluencies, we become very self-conscious.
As if I’m not to begin with haha.
😀
You are not alone, and it’s not that bad. Your poems were lovely, Luanne, and your fellow poets very talented. Thanks for posting the podcast.
Thank you, Anneli. That is so sweet.
🙂
I was active in Toastmasters for over a decade and they womped the um’s and ah’s out of me. It takes someone telling you and being conscious about it. You know it now so you can work on it. It only takes practice!
Hahaha, where am I going to get this practice? Do you want to give me a lesson once a week? 😉
You were wonderful, Luanne. I loved your poems–and really, everyone’s.
I hated the way I looked. We’re all our own worse critics. 😅
Ah thank you so much, Merril. Aren’t we though? Can’t stand to see or hear myself. Pathologically can’t stand it. I’m trying to force myself, like posting that selfie on social media of myself. But it makes me a bit hysterical.
😀
I’m so glad that Liz recorded the event. Lynn. I didn’t hear any “ums.” 🙂 I loved listening to you read. Your word choices and imagery are so rich. That was lovely.
Oh, thank you!!!!!!!! The ums were in the intial interview section, not in the reading itself. Kate says I need to practice, but how do I practice speaking off the cuff? hmm Anyway, thank you so much for listening!!!!!
I didn’t notice you saying “um” at all! It was really fun, Luanne. Thanks for all the planning.
It was all in the introductory interview portion. Good grief. Awful.
You have such a good presence, Luanne, when you read poems or convey information. I think you do a great job of sharing interesting and relevant things!
Aw thank you so much! That is such a nice compliment!
Hooray!
