Two Arizona Bussokuseki: #TankaTuesday

The challenge for 24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge, No. 19, 1/30/24, Part II: Deep Cold is to write a bussokuseki poem which is similar to a tanka, but has an extra line at the end: 5-7-5-7-7-7. My kigos are “ground hog day” and “depth of winter” and I used one in each of two bussokuseki. Spring really seemed to have sprung on my walk today, but of course we are supposed to get a rainstorm and cold tomorrow night.

in depth of winter

the sun comes out and warms us

the sweet acacias

blossom, perfuming the air,

birds chirp and trill their anthems

tomorrow chill will set in

***

Friday ground hog day

will determine spring’s advent

fair days came for us

with the birth of our grandson

who will celebrate one week

of life on that holiday

  1. Congratulations!!

  2. I love both of your poems! (And the little feet, too, of course.)

  3. How lovely, Luanne. I love February as it brings us closer to spring. I heard it’s warm for you in Arizona. xx

    • Thanks, Colleen! February 1 is my daughter’s birthday and that always means spring is close (for us in AZ). Yesterday was 80 degrees and today is also so nice. Short-term but still.

  4. Love these Luann, you’re an inspiration! I’ll be teaching Haiku in the coming months again and hope to use yours as an example! Congrats on your new Grandson!!!

  5. Don’t you just love those feet? Don’t forget this little piggie went to market, when he’s older for sure.
Loved the poems, Luanne!! You will find renewed inspiration – fresh feelings…

  6. Lovely poem and cute feet, Luanne

  7. A great picture. At this point, everything is so tiny! Great poems and wish I had your temps. Still cold and dreary here.

    • Ugh, that sounds awful. It’s been so beautiful for two days. But by tomorrow night that is going to change. Yes, he’s so tiny, but doing well! fingers crossed that continues!

I love those little feet, so tender, than never trod earth.
Also the bussokuseki, the first so weather-like with its hesitations and about-faces.

  9. It’s beautiful. So is your grandson!!! Happy Groundhog day.

  10. Happy Early Spring to you and your family, Luanne. The best of best spring blooms. Congratulations.

  11. Amy

  17. Oh, I love the photo of his little feet ❤️ Lovely poetry too 😘

  18. Those are the sweetest little feet, Luanne. He’s going to be a great walker, hiker, runner, hard to tell which, but those feet have many roads on them already! 🙂 I’m so happy for you. The weather pales in comparison to your internal weather! 🙂

  19. Love the poems!!! Congratulations again on this beautiful new grandbaby. Wishing you and all of your family blessings with this perfect little bundle of love.

  20. Beautiful lines

  21. Congratulations !
    And beautiful lines

  22. It is so fun to sing lullablies to our own children and then to our grands. There is a lovely book by Kay Chorao called ‘The Baby’s Bedtime Book (newer versions come with a CD) – when I first got mine there was no CD so I just sang the verses in different voices with tunes I made up! The lullablies are from all over the world. 😀

(I’m glad the new parents enjoyed ‘Bounce’ ~💙Jules)

Hi Luanne, both of these are delightful. One week old is so very small.

  25. Those feet are so sweet, Luanne…. And the juxtaposition of the natural elements with the personal celebration of the birth of your grandson on Groundhog Day creates a harmonious blend of nature and life’s milestones! MAZAL TOV!
