The challenge for 24 Seasons Syllabic Poetry Challenge, No. 19, 1/30/24, Part II: Deep Cold is to write a bussokuseki poem which is similar to a tanka, but has an extra line at the end: 5-7-5-7-7-7. My kigos are “ground hog day” and “depth of winter” and I used one in each of two bussokuseki. Spring really seemed to have sprung on my walk today, but of course we are supposed to get a rainstorm and cold tomorrow night.
in depth of winter
the sun comes out and warms us
the sweet acacias
blossom, perfuming the air,
birds chirp and trill their anthems
tomorrow chill will set in
***
Friday ground hog day
will determine spring’s advent
fair days came for us
with the birth of our grandson
who will celebrate one week
of life on that holiday
Congratulations!!
Thank you, Carole!!!
I love both of your poems! (And the little feet, too, of course.)
Thank you, Liz! Those feet!!!!
You’re welcome, Luanne!
How lovely, Luanne. I love February as it brings us closer to spring. I heard it’s warm for you in Arizona. xx
Thanks, Colleen! February 1 is my daughter’s birthday and that always means spring is close (for us in AZ). Yesterday was 80 degrees and today is also so nice. Short-term but still.
You’ve got to take the good temperatures while you can, Luanne. My husband’s birthday is February 12th. I love this month. I always feel like we’re over the hump of the January doldrums after the holidays.
It’s true about over the hump. And my daughter’s wedding anniversary is February 12 :).
Love these Luann, you’re an inspiration! I’ll be teaching Haiku in the coming months again and hope to use yours as an example! Congrats on your new Grandson!!!
Oh, thank you so much, Susan! He’s my new poetic inspiration!
Don’t you just love those feet? Don’t forget this little piggie went to market, when he’s older for sure.
Loved the poems, Luanne!! You will find renewed inspiration – fresh feelings…
Thanks, Sheila. Oh, I won’t forget! I’ve already been singing him my lullaby repertoire.
Excellent! You’re in the game for sure then!!
I had him today for two hours. He just slept the whole time :/.
I thought Ella was a blob for six months, but now that she’s four years old, I sometimes long for the “blob” time so enjoy!
A blob! Hahaha. But cute blobs are still cute!
Lovely poem and cute feet, Luanne
Thanks, John! Such cute feet!
😊
What John said.
Haha. He has cute feet to match the rest of him!
A great picture. At this point, everything is so tiny! Great poems and wish I had your temps. Still cold and dreary here.
Ugh, that sounds awful. It’s been so beautiful for two days. But by tomorrow night that is going to change. Yes, he’s so tiny, but doing well! fingers crossed that continues!
I love those little feet, so tender, than never trod earth.
Also the bussokuseki, the first so weather-like with its hesitations and about-faces.
Never trod earth–so true. What a cool way to look at them. Thanks, Wilma!
It’s beautiful. So is your grandson!!! Happy Groundhog day.
Thank you, Polly. Hah, happy Imbolc today and Groundhog tomorrow!
Happy Early Spring to you and your family, Luanne. The best of best spring blooms. Congratulations.
Thank you so much, Selma :)!
Wonderful images! And how are the baby and his parents doing? And his grandparents?
Everyone is good right now. I got to watch him for two hours today but he just slept (darn).
Never disturb a sleeping baby! 🙂
Very sweet poem and photo of baby feet. Nicely done.
Thanks so much, Ally!!!
So precious, Luanne. The little feet bring back so many lovely memories. ❤️
Thank you, Gwen! Aw, yeah, little feet are the best!
Congratulations Luanne…grandchildren give us a new life!
Your poems speak of all the beauties that spring brings. Enjoy double joys!
Thank you so much, Balroop. Sending you big hugs!
So sweet, Luanne! What a precious picture, and your poems are wonderful!

Congratulations! A child always brings light into life.
Oh, I love the photo of his little feet ❤️ Lovely poetry too 😘
Those are the sweetest little feet, Luanne. He’s going to be a great walker, hiker, runner, hard to tell which, but those feet have many roads on them already! 🙂 I’m so happy for you. The weather pales in comparison to your internal weather! 🙂
Love the poems!!! Congratulations again on this beautiful new grandbaby. Wishing you and all of your family blessings with this perfect little bundle of love.
Beautiful lines
Congratulations !
And beautiful lines
It is so fun to sing lullablies to our own children and then to our grands. There is a lovely book by Kay Chorao called ‘The Baby’s Bedtime Book (newer versions come with a CD) – when I first got mine there was no CD so I just sang the verses in different voices with tunes I made up! The lullablies are from all over the world. 😀
(I’m glad the new parents enjoyed ‘Bounce’ ~💙Jules)

Hi Luanne, both of these are delightful. One week old is so very small.
Those feet are so sweet, Luanne…. And the juxtaposition of the natural elements with the personal celebration of the birth of your grandson on Groundhog Day creates a harmonious blend of nature and life’s milestones! MAZAL TOV!
~David
