Synonym Haiga #TankaTuesday

This week’s #TankaTuesday by Colleen Chesebro is to write a syllabic poem using synonyms of the words “quiet” and “seek.” I decided to try a haiga, although that is a little dangerous.

A haiga, in its original form, is a Japanese painting with a haiku in it. The text and image work together. The reason I think it’s “dangerous” for me to try this form is that my mixed media fun leans more abstract, so some people might not think this is a haiga. However, I am experimenting here because I like the idea of blending text and image.

I used “silence” for quiet (as a noun) and “pursued” for seek.

There’s a lot of truth in this haiga: we never really had a monsoon season this year, and yet it’s now September. How will we get to fall if we don’t have monsoons to shift the balance? We have to actively pursue fall by decorating with pumpkins and eating pumpkin ice cream.

  1. Managing fall by eating is much easier than trying to manage the weather!

  2. I love your haiga. The burnt corners of the paper were the perfect touch.

  3. I like your way of pursuing fall!

Here’s my pumpkin ice cream story. We were at a Thai restaurant with our kids when they were young. They had homemade pumpkin ice cream for dessert. One of them said, “this tastes just like a pumpkin candle smells.” All of us understood except my husband. 🙂

  4. Love the idea of pursuing Fall!

  5. Beautiful sentiment, lovely choice of words. I like how you blended the text with image, very creative.

  6. I enjoyed it, Luanne. The dry image worked perfectly with the Haiku.

  7. This haiga is aesthetically appealing besides stating the thoughts of an elusive monsoon. Its connection with fall is palpable.
Many thanks for reviewing Fusion, Luanne. I am delighted that you picked up my latest release to read and review. 🥰

  8. Awesome! I absolutely love the poem…It is perfect as it is. I am ready for pumpkins and all things Autumnal.

  9. Your haika is lovely, Luanne! The texture of the image is sensational. Oh, monsoon never arrived… In Southern California, we saw low clouds in the morning and eagarly anticipated the rain. As soon as mid-day arrived, clouds were gone.

  10. Very nice. And well, of course I agree with the eating of ice cream. Bring on fall!

  11. Amy

But…I am not ready for fall!!

  12. Lovely haiga Luanne 💕

  13. Robbie’s inspiration

An excellent poem. Your weather sounds very odd. That seems to be the new normal.

  14. Luanne, I like how you have your finger on the pulse of the seasons and that you have the fix we need. Nicely done and the artwork looks good with the poem.

    • Ah, thank you so much! I really appreciate it. And by the way today has been 110 degrees still, almost mid-September. I’m about ready to lose my mind. Hot again tomorrow, I heard.

  15. “ We have to actively pursue fall by decorating with pumpkins and eating pumpkin ice cream” I believe this is the way indeed. That will balance things: no monsoon? No problem! Great haiga, Luanne. Xoxo

  16. Luanne, I love the haiga or shahai if you use a photo. I really like what you did. I’m using this image in the examples for our 24 Forms. Thanks so much. 🧡

Hi Luanne, both the artwork and the poem are delightful 🩵

  18. Very creative. A piece of art you should frame!
I hope you get your needed rain.
We were a tad dry and then had four days with some amount of rain.

    • Aw, thank you so much! I wish we could get rain. It happened tonight in parts of Phoenix, but not by us (of course!).

      • Sometimes the weather passes us by too – we live in a bit of a valley. A relative will call saying she has rain or snow and we get nothing and they are only about 15 minutes away. But we had more rain last night… hoping you get some soon!

        • Thank you–it was a miracle! It ended up raining with thunder and lightening last night and then a little bit this morning!

          • We had some rain last eve also. But once the sun came out it got muggy – again!

I was just reading headlines …the moon is moving away from the earth and causing issues… What isn’t?

Humans are good at adapting to where they live. Glad you did get some rain 🙂

            • The moon is moving away permanently or as part of a cycle? Because if it’s the first, that is really scary!!!

              • Permanently… Just like the sun is going to vanish… I’m sure in several hundrends of generations… and there really isn’t anything one can do to stop the sun from burning.

Science can be scary. But sometimes I think we get caught up in the ‘what ifs’ or even the ‘what wills’ that can’t at least, not at this time be changed by humans.

Apparently the moon is moving away……(how fast?) The …Answer(s): Laser ranging measurements of the change in the distance from the Earth to the Moon tell us that the Moon is moving away from the Earth at a rate of about 3.78 cm per year.”

              • I have to go look this up. Freaking out!

              • Oh, goodness. Science has so many strange facts. But some of them are just not applicaple in the real present moment.

                Take the supernatural – of which some people like Sarah Winchester of the famed Winchester Mystery House;
                https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winchester_Mystery_House.

Believe in goodness, believe in angels, believe in love…. I did not mean to upset you in any way – I’m sorry.

              • That’s ok. It’s important to know what’s going on. I definitely believe in angels! And I have visited the Winchester house. it’s funny that you mention supernatural because I am in a write-athon this week about the supernatural!

              • I have not visited the Winchester house. I’ve had some odd experiences… I’d discuss privately. But for the most part these days I focus on ‘light’ and ‘goodness’.

Science has its place. Just as unpredictable nature has its place. Perhaps the supernatural is more unpredictable nature than science 🙂 💖

              • There is something in the supernatural, that is for sure!

              • Not all boo and skitter. I like the way the TV show “Touched By An Angel” did some portrals 🙂

              • I’ve never seen that show!

              • I like that the Angel of Death wasn’t a scary monster. Just looked like a regular guy. Calm and nice.

              • I’ll have to look for the show.

              • I think the Angel of Death came in later in the series. It ran for several years.

  19. I love the idea of pursuing Fall, Luanne ~ this is a lovely write! <3

    Much love,
    David

  20. I just had a pumpkin pie blizzard from Dairy Queen last night.😋
