Cats and Dogs and Poems, Oh My! And Mysteries, Too!

The American Academy of Poets welcomes in Women’s History Month (March) with this list of poems:

Batter My Heart, Transgender’d God” by Meg Day
The Soul selects her own Society (303)” by Emily Dickinson
I Sit and Sew” by Alice Dunbar-Nelson
Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)” by Nikki Giovanni
Bring Back Our Girls ” by Marwa Helal
Poem about My Rights ” by June Jordan
How to Triumph Like a Girl” by Ada Limón
Exclusively on Venus ” by Trace Peterson
Diving into the Wreck” by Adrienne Rich
On Virtue” by Phillis Wheatley

That first poem is a “rewrite” of a famous John Donne Holy Sonnet Batter my heart, three-person’d God which is one of my favorite poems. What do you think about what Day did with the Donne poem?

I do have an update on my cat Tiger and the test for pancreatitis. Her test is at the very high end of normal. That result, coupled with her other out of whack test results could mean that she has an inflammation of the pancreas. The question is whether she has an inflammation that can improve, but has started a slow decline (kidney disease, for instance) because of her age (15)–or if it’s the beginning of a very serious disease. She is asking for prayers and healing vibes. OK, I am asking on her behalf, but she does want them!

Here is a cool reading opportunity, as well as an opportunity to help shelter animals, at the incredible bargain price of $.99! That’s LESS THAN A DOLLAR, FOLKS! One of the recipients of the funds is Home Fur Good, the shelter where I volunteer!!!!!!!!! An all-female group of cozy mystery writers wrote a story collection which is available for preorder now through the following sites.  Summer Snoops Unleashed.  Each story is the length of a novella, between 15,000-30,000 words.

Preorder it now because: All the royalties from pre-orders will be donated to the Rescues. Royalties collected after release will go to help authors defray the cost of publishing and marketing. So the time to buy is NOW!!!! I just purchased mine through Apple iTunes!

Maria Grazia Swan is a mystery writer who also volunteers at Home Fur Good. Her story is included in this collection. Maria has published several mystery series, and they are wonderfully written, fun cozies, featuring dogs and cats.

Lastly, a lil ole reminder about Kin Types as a good addition to Women’s History Month.

“Kin Types exhumes the women who have died long ago to give life to them, if only for a few moments. Through genealogical and historical research, Luanne Castle has re-discovered the women who came before her. Using an imaginative lens, she allows them to tell their stories through lyric poems, prose poems, and flash nonfiction.”

  4. Wishing tha best for Tiger

  5. I will have to come back to read the poems, but thank you for the list.
Thinking good thoughts for Tiger! Poor baby! At least it’s not totally bad news (says the optimist).
The book is such a good idea, and of course Kin Types!

    • What a difference a PERIOD makes.I made an error in the price of the set of mysteries. It’s 99 CENTS, as in less than a dollar! Man oh man. The listis fabulous!
Thank you about Tiger and Kin Types, Merril. The book for the shelter animals is a great idea. So wish I had put that period in that to begin with. This shows how I tired I am with so much family/friends in town.

  6. It’s so hard when our fur babies are ill. They can’t tell you what they want you to do so I’m just sending good vibes and prayers. I love the idea of writing stories in support of rescue shelters. I’ll have to figure out how to get a copy as I love stories with animals in them. It seems they aren’t sold through Amazon. ;(

Hello Luanne, thank you so much for posting this.

  8. The fur and skin folks here are praying for Tiger.

  9. Diving into the Wreck has always been a favorite. I’m not familiar with some of these poems, so I will go back and read them.
Tiger is in my prayers, and I’m sure Bootsie, Sylvie, Penny, and Flora are remembering to pray, too. They all have different methods of prayer as they belong to varying religious affiliations (I know it’s strange, but true!). But I know they’re praying for Tiger. Our minpin, Demi, had chronic pancreatitis. I sure hope for the best for your kitty.
That’s such a good idea for a fundraiser. Is the price for the entire set? Can anything be purchased individually?

  10. Hoping that Tiger will continue to improve! Thanks for all the great information about poems and pets! Sending love.

  11. Best wishes and prayers for Tiger and of course, for you!

  12. Hugs and kisses to Tiger and you, thoughts and prayers as well. We know our cats (as well as us) go into decline, but we just want it to be slow and easy.

  13. I’m so sorry about Tiger.

  14. Luanne, thank you for the update on Tiger, sending good thoughts and prayers your and her way!

  15. I hope Tiger’s doing well! Our Daisy cat actually became more ill, so we chose to do the humane thing and end her suffering. I’ve never had to do that before. At least we were with her in the end.

  16. Luanne, I know you’re super-swamped right now, but just wanted to let you know I saw your action-packed post with the cute photo of Perry & Felix, loved the observation from Felix’s mind, was so sorry to hear about your little health challenges, and about the broken lamp, and then I was touched by your mention of our visit and your sharing the poem. 🙂 I’m thinking of you, wonderful memories of our talk! XX Hoping things get back to near-normal soon.

    • Thank you–I sure hope so! It continues to be weird here. Isn’t Felix a hoot? He keeps a lot to himself, but sometimes he’s just gotta let it out. The gardener glued the lamp and you have to look right at it to see the crack because it’s a patterned base! Hope your week is going well!

      • He was wonderful. I’m soooo glad to hear about the lamp-gluing success. It reminds me, we had a broken-bowl occurrence a couple of months ago, one of those “kid-handprint” bowls that I did with Erica at a professional ceramics place back in ’98 when she was 4. It’s a large serving-bowl with her handprint in the middle and my careful lettering around the edge of her name and the year. The bowl was dropped on our hard-surface countertop and the center remained intact, but the sides broke into pieces. My husband is also a gluer-extraordinare, and he carefully re-assembled it, and it looks fine enough, though you can see all the cracks, it’s that white-clay ceramic they have in pottery places. However, just after I read an article that mentioned the Japanese concept of embracing breaks or age-related defects in objects, as an indication of how long you have enjoyed them and what the objects have done for your family. I decided, then, just to try enjoying the item without rueing it got broken. 🙂

  17. Praying for your little Tiger and that you have received some good news and prognosis for her!
