You’re welcome, Luanne. Thank you for the recommendation. Substack seems to be gaining a lot of traction, but I’m reluctant to subscribe to anything that is going give me more email to deal with.
I hear you on that, but I am finding a few of these substacks to be really interesting reads. Carol’s perhaps in particular.
Do you think that Substack sites will replace blogs?
That’s a good question. I think a lot of writers are starting substacks. The idea seems to be to get people to subscribe for free, and then you can try to get them to pay for a paid subscription by offering more at that level. So it’s a bit more ambitious and less “random” than a blog. I mean, I am apt to write about anything on my blog and if I didn’t post for awhile it wouldn’t be a big deal and if I wrote about facial skin care (which I have considered) it would be ok on my blog. But on a substack? Not so much and especially if there are any paid subscribers at all.
Hmm. Expecting people to pay for what I post online does not appeal to me at all. Too much pressure, and it would take all the fun out of it.
Luanne, I think you describe Substack very well. I have several free subscriptions on that platform and one paid subscription. I really enjoy the writing I find there. I also enjoy knowing that a percentage of the subscription fees (if any) go directly to that writer.
On Medium, there’s one subscription fee and that gets divvied up among the thousands of writers writing there. So, yeah, sometimes the story you spent days writing and polishing will net you a few pennies.
I don’t think Substack or Medium will replace blogs, but I could understand some writers switching just because they like the interface better than, say, WordPress. I guess that’s why Jill Weatherholt moved to Substack. Her newsletter is free, but she just didn’t like working with WordPress anymore.
I have a premium account on WordPress and have thought about moving to Substack to save $ but … I have more control over my blog on WordPress. I might gripe about it, but I’ve gotten used to it 😉
